Vol.3 Riding the wave of the times, Hadano's long-established restaurant "Ichinoya" celebrates its 150th anniversary

It has been 150 years since the restaurant was founded as a soba noodle shop in Hadano in 1863. We spoke to Mr. Akiyama, the fourth-generation owner of Ichinoya, a restaurant beloved by many Hadano residents, about his journey so far, the charms of Hadano, and his outlook for the future.

— What kind of restaurant is Ichinoya?

Next year, in 2023, Ichinoya will celebrate its 150th anniversary, and I am the fourth generation owner. Like Kanai Sake Brewery, we were founded in the town of Hadano, and have grown over the years with the support of the people of Hadano. Twenty years ago, we moved to a location just one minute's walk from the south exit of Hadano Station, and we continue to serve many customers today. Since our founding, we have wanted to be a convenient restaurant for the people of Hadano, and we cater to all kinds of dining needs, from lunch and dinner to banquets and memorial services, as well as catering and boxed lunches. The restaurant has a modern Japanese space with table seating, semi-private rooms, and a banquet hall.

The interior of Ichinoya, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary, is a calm, modern Japanese space.

-What kind of menu items are popular?

We offer a wide variety of menus across genres, including Japanese, French, Italian, and ethnic cuisine, to please customers of all ages. Among the most popular dishes are Japanese cuisine, and currently the beef hotpot set menu and the banquet menu featuring A5-ranked Japanese Black beef steamed in a bamboo steamer are popular.

- You also carry sake from Kanai Sake Brewery. What has the reaction been like from customers?

We currently carry a variety of sake brands, but under the motto "Don't let pretty sake travel," we focus on local sake from Kanagawa. In particular, the sake from Kanai Sake Brewery, the only sake brewery in Hadano, is popular with tourists as a local sake. In addition, "Ichinoya" (300ml of special pure rice sake), which is made with great care just for "Ichinoya," pairs well with Japanese cuisine and is very popular with customers.

"Ichinoya" offers recommended local sakes such as "Mozart" and "Shirasasa Tsuzumi" from Kanai Sake Brewery.

- Please tell us about the charms of Hadano that you know.

I think the appeal of Hadano is that it is blessed with abundant nature, has good transportation access, and is easy to live in. In addition, it is a peaceful and safe area with no natural disasters or major incidents. As the starting point for climbing Mt. Tanzawa, the charm of Hadano may be better known by climbers who visit the area than by its residents.

- Please tell us what you would like to work on in the future.

Unfortunately, the shopping district in Hadano has become almost deserted, with most shops closed. Ichinoya is a place of relaxation for the local residents, and we strive to be able to serve them through food at the various events that add color to their lives. We have also opened a soba restaurant in Tsurumaki Onsen and a cafe on the first floor of the Chamber of Commerce. We hope to continue to work steadily as a community-based restaurant that caters to the needs of our customers, so that the residents of Hadano can enjoy themselves as much as possible.
